Signs Your Transmission Needs Service

Transmission problems usually get worse fast — and catching them early can be the difference between a fluid flush and a full rebuild. Schedule a diagnostic right away if you notice any of these:

  • The transmission is slipping — the engine revs but the car doesn’t accelerate as it should
  • Hard, harsh, or jerky shifts between gears
  • Delayed engagement shifting from park to drive or reverse
  • Grinding, shuddering, or vibration during gear changes
  • A burning smell — often transmission fluid overheating
  • Whining, humming, or clunking sounds while driving
  • Red transmission fluid leaking under the parked car
  • Check-engine light tied to transmission codes
  • The car won’t shift into gear, or a clutch that slips or sticks (manual)

Quick Transmission Questions

A few of the questions we hear most often. If yours isn’t covered, give the shop a call — we’re happy to help.

How do I know if my transmission is failing?

The most common signs are slipping (revving without acceleration), hard or delayed shifts, grinding or shuddering during gear changes, a burning smell, and red fluid leaking from the car. Any of those — bring it in for a diagnostic. Transmission issues rarely resolve on their own, and waiting can turn a small fix into a full rebuild.

Can transmission problems be fixed without a full rebuild?

Often, yes. A lot of what looks like a major transmission problem is actually low fluid, a leaking seal, a worn solenoid, a bad sensor, or a torque-converter issue — all repairable without tearing the transmission apart. That’s why we diagnose before quoting. Sometimes a rebuild really is the right call, but it’s not the first answer to every problem.

What’s the difference between repair, rebuild, and replacement?

Repair fixes specific components — seals, solenoids, sensors, the torque converter, the valve body. A rebuild means disassembling the transmission, replacing worn internal parts (clutches, bands, bearings, seals), and reassembling it. Replacement means installing a new, remanufactured, or used transmission. We help you understand which path makes sense for your vehicle and your budget.

Do you service automatic and manual transmissions?

Yes — both. We handle repair, rebuild, and replacement on automatic transmissions (traditional, CVT, and dual-clutch) and full clutch service on manuals. No outside referrals.

How often should I change my transmission fluid?

It depends on your vehicle. Most automatics call for a fluid change every 30,000 to 60,000 miles; some newer vehicles claim “lifetime” fluid but still benefit from service. Manuals typically go longer. Your owner’s manual is the best guide — or bring it in and we’ll check the condition for you.

Can you replace a clutch?

Yes. We handle full clutch replacement on manual transmissions — pressure plate, clutch disc, throwout bearing, and pilot bearing where applicable. If your clutch is slipping, sticking, or making noise, bring it in and we’ll diagnose what needs replacing.

How long does transmission work take?

Diagnostics typically take 1 to 2 hours. Fluid services and smaller repairs often run a half-day to a full day. Rebuilds and replacements are multi-day jobs — usually 2 to 4 days depending on parts availability and the specific transmission. We’ll give you a clear time estimate up-front, and if the car shouldn’t be driven, we offer towing.
